It has been a banner year for Big Spoon Roasters, and we couldn’t have done any of it without YOU! As we begin 2020 with a continued focus on our mission to make the best food possible without compromise, we thought we’d share a few of the highlights from 2019.
Nut Butter Revamp: Perhaps the most significant change this year (and maybe even in our history) was our recent nut butter evolution. The changes included:
A larger size jar, increasing from 10oz to 13oz
30% more nut butter per jar at zero extra cost (in some cases we’ve even lowered prices!)
More descriptive nut butter names
Signature colors inspired by each recipe
New, easier-to-read labels with symbols for attributes and allergens
Two New Recipes: As part of our nut butter revamp, we released two new recipes. Our first ever all cashew butter, Cashew Butter with Coconut Nectar & Sea Salt, and a new collaboration with Go Get ‘Em Tiger on an Espresso Nut Butter. We appreciate all the fantastic feedback from you about these two new nut butters. 🙏
Limited Batch Series: In September, we launched a new Limited Batch series of nut butters. Web exclusive and tiny batch, these nut butters give us a chance to get a little adventurous with our recipes. So far we’ve offered a Pepperfest Carolina Reaper Peanut Butter, Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate Gianduja, and now Lemon Cashew! The response to this program has floored us – THANK YOU! Keep an eye out in April for the next edition!
New Bar Packaging: Ok, so technically, this change happened at the end of 2018, but it was in 2019 that our new bars got to spread their wings. Changes included:
A switch from whey protein to non-GMO pea protein
60% less packaging
New packaging design with colorful botanical art
Two new bars: Figgy Chai and Cranberry Cashew
REI Innovator Series: Speaking of our bars, we had the honor of being selected for the REI Innovator Series. As a finalist, we were given the opportunity to pitch our bars as a potential product for REI stores. With the help of #bigspoonrunning ambassador Mike Wardian, the presentation went great. Our bars will arrive in 40+ REI locations in February!
Burt’s Bees Natural Launchpad: We had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Burt’s Bees Natural Launchpad this year. Late in 2018, we were selected from thousands of entries to receive their grant and be a part of their Cohort 3. The launchpad gave us an opportunity to attend two days of coaching at Burt’s Bees headquarters, plus access to their incredible team members and a group of peers. We learned so much from this experience and are so grateful to have been a part of it!
Bon Appetit Chai Spice Feature: To our total surprise, in April, our Chai Spice Peanut & Almond Butter was featured by Bon Appetit as part of their “Highly Recommended” series. The piece was warm and hilarious, and we were absolutely thrilled!
SNL & The Late Show with Stephen Colbert: This year, we had the great fortune to have our nut butter bars featured in the green room at SNL and our Almond Butter featured in the green room at the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. So, when you’re backstage, help yourself!
Amazon Prime: This year, we introduced both our nut butters and bars to Amazon Prime members via a new Big Spoon Roasters storefront. A primary goal is to make our products more accessible, and this was certainly a step in that direction.
Best Year Yet: Thanks in no small part to your support, we’ve had our best year yet! We’ve expanded our reach via retail partners and have seen incredible engagement with our online community. We can’t say thank you enough for supporting a small business and truly homemade food. Here’s to a wonderful New Year!
