Quality is not an act, it is a habit. – Aristotle
Part coffee bar, part bakery, part cafe, and part specialty food & gift shop, Durham, NC-based Foster’s Market is quintessentially southern, rooted in fresh ingredients, made-from-scratch quality, and premium hospitality. By sticking to these values, this business has stood the test of time. Opened in May of 1990 by Sara Foster, Foster’s Market has remained a gathering place and staple of the Durham community for almost 30 years.
Given her background, it seems as though Foster was destined to open Foster’s Market. As a child, she loved spending time in her grandfather’s Tennessee general store and with her grandmother in the garden picking vegetables and deciding how they should be prepared. In her 20’s she moved to New York City to attend culinary school and worked her way into Martha Stewart’s kitchen, where she remained as chef for nine years. Yearning to build something of her own, Foster moved with her husband Peter Sellars to Durham and opened Foster’s Market. At that time, nothing similar existed in the area, and they quickly gained a reputation for delicious homemade baked goods and house prepared breakfast, lunch, dinner, and grab and go options. Spurred by their success, Foster wrote several cookbooks over the years including 2016’s Foster’s Market Favorites: 25th Anniversary Collection which was honored with an International Association of Culinary Professionals Book Award, and a James Beard Award nomination.
As years passed and critical acclaim came flooding in, Foster’s Market has maintained its welcoming atmosphere and dedication to delicious food. We are so honored to have our handmade nut butters and protein bars on their shelves. They were one of our very first retail partners back when most of our sales happened at the farmers market, and we’re forever grateful for their support over the years. If you’re ever in Durham, Foster’s Market is a must visit!
