We can choose food that doesn’t lead to illnesses like diabetes and cancer. We can choose food that doesn’t contribute to water pollution and climate change. And we can choose food that keeps local economies vibrant and farmers on their land. – Frances Beinecke
In 2007, busy mother of two Courtney Tellefsen faced a dilemma. She wanted to support local farmers but making it to the weekly farmers market with a 2- and 4-year-old was not always feasible. She realized that she wasn’t alone, and that more busy families would support hard-working local farmers if it was simpler to access their produce. With this goal in mind she reached out to friends and neighbors in Raleigh, NC, to gauge interest in a pay-as-you-go system of purchasing farm-direct fruits and vegetables that would be delivered right to your door. Sure enough, this idea was met with enthusiasm, and soon thereafter Courtney began delivering customized boxes of local goodies.
Fast forward 10+ years and The Produce Box has expanded to work with more than 70 local farmers and employ more than 200 people to deliver their boxes of fresh fruits, vegetables, local meat, seafood, and other pantry goods, including our handmade nut butters and bars.
As the business has grown, so has The Produce Box’s commitment to the community it serves. This summer with the support of 11,000 of its members, they brought $80,000 worth of produce to families in need via the YMCA Camp High Hopes in Cary. Every other week campers bring home a box of fresh produce provided by the produce box. This was their sixth year participating in this program, with plans to continue and expand in the future. They also work to reduce food waste by offering a “Blemish Box” as part of their weekly menu. Customers can opt to receive produce at a discount that is perfectly fresh and delicious but just not “perfect” looking. Discarding of “ugly produce” is one of our nation’s leading contributors to food waste. By offering this produce to customers The Produce Box does their part to push back against this trend.
We are so honored to partner with The Produce Box to deliver our handmade nut butter and bars to homes across NC!
