It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.
– Laura Ingalls Wilder
When it comes to food, certain childhood favorites never go out of style. Who doesn’t love a good grilled cheese or family taco night? There’s a reason these sentimental treats continue to delight well into adulthood; they’re delicious. As we reach the heart of wintertime, comfort foods have a particular allure. It was a craving for one such childhood classic, the peanut butter and banana sandwich, that led us to our January Featured Jam: Banana Jam from STAGG Jam and Marmalade.
Based in Brooklyn, NY, STAGG was inspired by founder Candice Ross’s family back in Louisiana, especially her grandfather. Ross describes him as a simple man who works with his hands to provide for his family; as a farmer, mechanic, and all-around maker of things. If his family needs something, he makes it happen. “His life is simple and meaningful, based around what he loves and who he shares it with,” Ross explains. This simplicity and straightforwardness is the ethos that drives STAGG and is evident in their creations, including the Banana Jam. The flavor of slow cooked bananas is amplified by just a handful of additional ingredients: lemon juice, sugar, vanilla bean, and a touch of pectin. The result is a jam that is just sweet enough to feel decadent and packed with banana flavor. We love it paired with our Espresso or Peanut Cocoa butters to make the grilled PB&B sandwiches of our dreams.
