There is a real magic in enthusiasm. It spells the difference between mediocrity and accomplishment. – Norman Vincent Peale
It’s hard to keep up with #bigspoonrunning ambassador Mike Wardian. Mike is a world-renowned, multiple record-breaking, ultra-marathon runner who never ceases to inspire us. One of the things that’s most amazing about Mike is that he’s always looking for new challenges. Rather than slowing down after a prolific 2018 he started 2019 with a bang, tackling the HURT 100 Miler, a notoriously treacherous endurance run through the Hawaii rainforest, placing 10th!
Just a week later, Mike was back at it with an incredible feat: he crushed the world record for 10 Marathons in 10 Days. Seven of those marathons were completed on seven different continents as part of the World Marathon Challenge (which he also won and for which he holds the Fastest Known Time). Oh, and he ran the Antarctica marathon in shorts!
Next, Mike took on the Washington and Old Dominion Trail, breaking another record for the fastest known time. Time for a break? Nope! Less than three weeks after that, Mike headed to Israel to attempt the fastest known time on the Israel National Trail. The trail, which spans 631 miles from Israel’s southern to northern border covers diverse landscapes, flora, fauna, and cultures. Mike completed it in just ten days 16 hours and 36 minutes, beating the previous record by about five days! While this might seem like enough accomplishments for a full year, he completed this feat on March 22nd.
On April 5th Mike competed in the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, followed by the Boston Marathon the week after that. At this point, Mike has raced 1081 miles in 2019 which is almost as much as he raced in all of 2018. And Mike shows no sign of slowing down. At the beginning of May, he completed the Hoka Project Carbon X 100K alongside a star-studded line-up of elite runners. Always seeking new ways to challenge himself, he then completed in the Spartan race series in TX which included one trail race and two obstacle races!
Next up for Mike: Man v. Horse, a Welsh marathon where runners race against mounted riders (!), followed by the Broken Arrow Sky Race weekend, which includes a 5K with 3100 feet of vertical gain on Friday, a 52K Saturday, and a 26K Sunday.
With all of his accomplishments, Mike remains an incredibly humble and positive human being. We are so thrilled to be a part of his team, fueling his inspirational feats with plenty of our handmade nut butter and protein bars!
