The Urban Canning Company was founded by Illene Sofranko out of a combined love for traditional preserving methods, southern foods, and modern flavors. Although born and bred in St. Petersburg, FL, surrounded by diverse cuisine, Illene grew up learning how to can and preserve from her great-uncle Ray, a native of Charmco, WV. Ray passed on the skills their family had developed in order survive the harsh winters in the West Virginia mountains. Illene took this knowledge and ran with it as a way to celebrate local agriculture, promote sustainable food, and stay connected to the food she was eating.
As a business that embraces all kinds of preserved and canned foods, The Urban Canning Company offers a variety of creations from Spicy Stout Mustard, to Sriracha Okra and Caramel Apple Fruit Spread. They also seek to continue the cultural tradition of canning by offering classes to the locals. DIY Fire Cider, Beginner Pickling + Bloody Mary Bar, and Beginner Jam Making: Apple Butter are just a few of the upcoming educational opportunities. Not in St. Petersburg? We are so excited to feature The Urban Canning Company’s Peppered Strawberry as our September Featured Jam. This thick fruit spread features deep strawberry flavor highlighted by the familiar brightness of balsamic vinegar and a subtle hint of heat from black pepper. This unique flavor combination makes it equally delicious in savory and sweet applications. We especially love it paired with our Peanut Cocoa Butter or Almond Cocoa Butter atop a late summer ice cream treat.
