Durham Free Lunch

Durham Free Lunch

October is Tackling Hunger Month, so we wanted to take a moment to highlight one of our favorite local programs working to relieve hunger. Durham Free Lunch (aka Durham Neighbors) was created at the start of the pandemic when local high school student Elijah King had the idea to launch a program to help feed those facing food insecurity as Durham Public Schools closed. He joined forces with Grant Ruhlman (Homebucha Kombucha), George O’Neil (Lil' Farm), and Geer Street Garden and got to work.

Since April 9th, Durham Neighbors has served over 7000 meals, raised over $100,000, and re-employed four kitchen staff. They are currently serving 200+ meals a day and offering kitchen staples like bread, fresh vegetables, and other resources. Their clientele includes Durham Public Schools families, childcare centers, Durham Housing Authority neighbors, people experiencing homelessness, and anyone else in need of food!

We are honored to donate our handmade nut butters to help their efforts. If you’re interested in supporting their work, you can do so here. They’ve teamed up with Don’t Waste Durham, a 501c(3) organization, so donations are tax-deductible.
