Notes from our Founder: Single-Serve Squeeze Packs

"Don't settle for style. Succeed in substance." - Wynton Marsalis One of the most frequent requests we receive from customers is for us to create single-serving squeeze packets of our nut butters. Our founder, Mark, recently addressed this question in a post on LinkedIn. The overwhelming response indicated he was on to something, so we thought we’d share it here!

From Mark:

I get why single-serve nut butter "packets" exist. I really do. At Big Spoon Roasters, we've looked into producing them a number of times, and the only way for us to make them involves a co-packer, and in some scenarios two co-packers. Minimum orders are huge (500k packets), and we were told to expect a 5-7% loss.

We have a manual, small-batch process, and we don't use co-packers because we like to see, feel, taste, and smell the food we're making from scratch in real-time. And I don't mean "small-batch" as a marketing term. Our batches are tiny. We measure, scoop, and stir. We toast ingredients on sheet pans. We fill jars one at a time and hand-apply labels. Our tolerance for loss in our process is less than 1%, and we're only satisfied with zero waste (more on that here). We have an obsessive focus on quality and we hold ourselves accountable to our sustainability goals, so we just can't do the packet thing until there's a better way.

In the meantime, we're making these small 3oz "flight-friendly" jars, which are recyclable and reusable. We hope they fit the "sample size" bill for some people.
